Bible Translation is the Great Commission

Over two thousand years ago, Jesus stood on a mountain in Galilee and called His disciples to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20) This command is at the very heart of illumiNations’ mission and the Bible translation movement itself. We are driven by asking ourselves this question: “How will we respond to this command?”

Through the history of the Church, Christians all over the globe have faithfully passed the torch of the Great Commission by ensuring that the Bible was made more and more available to peoples of every language. From Germany to Guatemala to England to Nigeria, faithful Christians like you and me have obeyed Jesus’ command.

But the job is not completed, and the torch has been passed to us. Now it’s our turn to run the race and follow the course plotted for us by Jesus that day in Galilee, by making disciples of all nations, in all languages, through God’s Word. It’s our job, it’s our purpose — it’s our very reason for being.
